LONGEVITY: Dick Myers, The Call To Late-Life Adventures
Show Notes Chapter Markers

Dick and I are late-life buddies. He is the father of my son-in-law and lives in a house he bought a few years ago with his son and my daughter. I really got to know Dick after he packed up his life in Houston and relocated in Los Angeles. Dick is 10 years my senior at age 82. Watching how Dick copes with change, adversity and loss has been an inspiring lesson in creative aging.

Earlier this year I wrote an article for 3rd Act Magazine called A Call To Adventure. In it I drew parallels between The Hero’s Journey, as described by mythologist Joseph Campbell, and the structure of common late-life transitions, like retirement and relocation.  I used Dick as an example of a person who has confronted numerous late-life transitions and has risen to the challenge. I ended the article by noting that Dick is a hero to me. He is a late-life warrior who confronts the dragons and ogres that lurk in the wilderness of old age and not only survives, but thrives.

In this interview podcast, Dick and I explore the late-life challenges he has faced and do our best to extract whatever pearls of wisdom and insight are available.
